Character User Interface
Character user interface based operating system allows user to give their instruction to the computer by typing commands using keyboards. It is a text based user interface that uses the character or text modeof the computer. It provides an environment where the user needs to type a command to perform a particular task. The main advantage of this interface is that they can be quick to use long as the user knows the correct commands. The main disadvantage is that they are very difficult to use of doesn't know the correct commands if the user is a beginner.MS-DOS, UNIX and Novell Netware are common examples of CUI based operating systems .
Some features of CUI based operating system are given below:
1) It is lesser user friendly.
2) It is much faster than GUI based operating system.
3) The user needs to remember the commands for operating this system.
4) It cannot display graphics, pictures, icons etc.
Graphical User Interface
Graphical User Interface based operating system allows the user to give their instruction to the computer by ponting and clicking graphical objects on the screen. It provides a graphical enviromemt where the user can perform an action by just a mouse click. It is a visual computer enviroment that uses graphics, icons and pointers to make the computer more user friendly.
GUI based operating system allows the user to interact with the computer through the graphical symbols or icons. The main advantage of this interface is that they are easy to use and the main disadvantage is the large amount of memory space they need.Microsoft Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 8, LINUX are examples of GUI.
Some features of GUI based operating system are given below :
1) It is more friendly compare to CUI.
2) It can display graphics, pictures, icons etc.
3) It requires larger memory space.
4 It supports all pointing device of computer.
